When it comes to gift giving in our house, I generally plan what we’ll do for my parents and Eric will plan what we do for his. It’s just been easier for us but since having kids, I’ve jumped in a little with both sides since I’ve been inspired by fun crafts the kids can do. They really make gift gifting even more fun :) And Eric is super thoughtful so often he’ll come up with something really neat for my parents.
Sometimes I like to focus on each individual vs the couple. I think those gifts are easier to find but you really need to have a sense of what your in-laws or parents wouldn’t buy for themselves or things you think they want but just haven’t taken the time to go get.
I mentioned this in a previous gift guide but we’ve been focusing on the gift of experience. I think giving gifts is one of my love languages and I LOVE having things to unwrap on Christmas day, but giving an experience seems to go the extra mile and often will create unforgettable memories. Plus you can always write them in a card and make the gift something to unwrap ;)
I’m going to share a few ideas and will cover both gifts to open and to experience. Your request of this guide has challenged me to think outside the box and really come up with some new ideas! So thank you!
Gifts to Give Parents & In-Laws!
Ornament that represents a memory from the year! Can be from a trip or symbolic of something that happened! Or you can always do a cute framed one of the kids!
Painted pottery! Get the kids to a studio and get some hand or footprints on a mug!
Nana Tumbler– thought this was super cute and perfect to keep those morning drinks warm all day! Of course you can find them for Grammy, Grandma, Mimi, or whatever else you may call them!
Plan a dinner night- is there any better way to say THANK YOU than treating your parents to a dinner? Even more fun if you join them :)
A Cozy Throw– For those nights you all curl up on the couch and catch up on life!
Amazon Alexa– Eric’s step dad still tells us this is his favorite gift we ever gave him! There is a new one that can be set up to create a ‘smart home’
Wine… A no-fail gift in our house. Pick a bottle or two of their favorite. Put a pretty bow on it. Make a special night of it!
Chocolates… we are obsessed with Frango Mints! I buy them every single year during the Holidays
Framed family photo… We used to give this to our grandparents growing up and I love this! It wasn’t every year (where would they all go?!) but once in a while and they loved them.
Personalized Christmas pillow: I think I may need one myself! These are perfect!
Nest Candle– There is no candle that compares to the Holiday scent!
Plane tickets! We live far away from family and I think planning times to see one another goes furthest of all. Planning a trip back home is always the best gift!
What are your go-to gifts for your parents or in-laws? Are they easy to shop for or do you struggle like we sometimes do?
