If you read my post on basics last month, you’ve got an idea of the essentials I find handy for your closet. Simple clothing that lends itself to options for dressing it up. Today’s post features some items that are long term necessities such as a nice coat, boots, jeans, and a bag or purse that you love and use every day. I find these pieces worth splurging for as they will last you a very long time.
For example, I absolutely love Frye Boots. I think they are chic, practical, and lend themselves to many ensembles. Plus they are so comfortable and well made! About three or so years ago, I decided I wanted these boots but didn’t have the funds for them. I started ‘Marg’s Fun Jar’- aka a mason jar under the sink, that I would put cash in every once in a while when I had it to save for these boots. Over the course of five months or so, I had a stash ready to pay for my boots. (You can bet there were days where I pulled out $40 bucks or so and threw it in there to grow quicker than just my sandwhich change…) But hey- I made myself WAIT. And I EARNED them. And I still wear them. ALL THE TIME :) Money well spent. If you don’t want or aren’t ready to spend the cash on Fryes, find a pair of black or brown boots that make you happy. You’ll wear them all the time.
I also find that a little black dress is an outfit you will wear over and over again. Pair it with heels and jewels and you’re ready for a night out. Throw on boots and a scarf with it and you’re ready for work. Pair it with flats and wear it while you shop. There is always an occasion for a little black dress. Plus black is so slimming and looks good on every skin tone… Win win.
Having a purse or bag that you love is also essential to your wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be Tory Burch. I linked that because I happen to love that brand. It can be anything that makes you happy. It’s the same story with the black flats. Flats are key for warmer weather, for the office, or for scurrying around town when it’s not quite warm enough to wear sandals but almost too warm for boots. Find a pair that you love! There are so many out there!
Other closet essentials include a coat that you love (I’ve had my eye on that Burberry coat but wooooooof, when’s the sale?!), simple studs, a black vest (I bought mine 5 years ago and I still wear it ALL cool-weather long), and cream and black heels. You don’t need to spend a ton of cash on the heels. I think they get scratched and worn so fast. But investing in a warm coat is definitely worth the bank for your buck.
Are there any other essentials you find handy for your closet? Let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts & ideas!

I agree with all these essentials! Personally, I think a crisp white button down shirt can be super useful in all kinds of situations, so it’s definitely a must-have in my closet :)

A great list that can be easily adapted to anyone’s style! I’m definitely thinking about investing in a good vest – I love me some layers! One thing I seem to always have in my closet is a blazer or another kind of jacket. Easily updates work outfits or dresses!

I totally agree that staple pieces are worth the money if you want good quality pieces to have for a long time! Maybe I should start a fun jar, I love that idea! Great info, thanks for sharing!

A great list of closet staples! I love investing in a nice watch, too, since I wear it just about everyday. :)

Absolutely love this post and couldn’t agree more! I definitely need to invest in a few quality pairs of black/nude heels. Fryes are amazing, but for now I’m happy with my relatively cheaper Ralph Lauren black leather boots. Maybe I need to start a mason jar under the sink!

I love this inspiration board! I really started researching minimalism and basic’s last year so this is right up my alley! It is a different take on your closet and I am slowly growing to love all of the clothes that I wear. I think I will have to adopt your Jar idea as well….
